Understanding the Requirements for Installing Traction Concepts LSD Conversions

Tech Tip: Inspecting and Preparing Your Differential for Installation

Before installing your Traction Concepts Limited Slip Conversion, it’s important to inspect your axle and pinion/spider gears for any grooves or raised casting areas. Make sure your differential is securely mounted on the bench and ready for installation. Wait until you have your LSD Conversion in hand so you know the exact clearance tolerances you’ll be working with.

Important Points to Remember:

  • Compatibility: The Traction Concepts LSD Conversion is designed to work with your differential’s axle and spider gears. It provides limited slip and locker functions. The mating surfaces of the axle and spider gears must be smooth and flat for optimal performance. This conversion only works on non-welded open differentials.
  • Condition Check: Make sure both your differential and transmission are in good working condition. Inspect all the components and seals, replacing any questionable parts.

Clearance Check:

  • Tolerance Measurement: Using a feeler gauge, check the clearance tolerance between the axle gear and the top TC LSD Disc Plate. The ideal clearance is approximately 0.003″ – 0.005″ before removing the conversion’s end clip tabs and dowels. You should be just before coil bind once the tabs and dowels are removed.
  • Action Required: If your clearance falls outside this range, or if it changes after machining the axle or spider gears, please email us directly for technical assistance.

Important Note:

Some differential axle and pinion gears require resurfacing for proper installation of the Traction Concepts LSD. This step is crucial for achieving optimal traction gains and ensuring long-lasting performance.

Additional Examples:

Here are some examples of differential axle and pinion gears that need machining before completing the Traction Concepts Install. Resurface any raised castings or grooves on the gear faces that mate with our Limited Slip Disc Plates.
